An interesting $2/$4 hand

Went on a massive heater and was able to sit down in a $2/$4 game tonight. Just kidding. No games going that I could play so I decided to observe the $2/$4 game that was taking place as this is the highest action game on this site. It was 3 players then it went down to 2. An interesting heads-up hand took place that left me scratching my award winning head.

With $256 (and his opponent covering), button raises to $12 and the BB calls. With $24 in the pot, the flop comes down J9♠5 and both players check. Turn comes Qand the BB bets $12. Button calls. River T and both players check it down. BB shows K6for a rivered straight and button mucks J♠J. How does the money not go in?!?!?

I can definitely understand button's check on the flop. Got top set in a heads-up game and pretty likely that BB completely whiffed. So have to keep him in the hand. But on the turn to only call a 1/2 pot bet on what's now a pretty wet board is bad. The river isn't a great card but I am still not a fan of the button's check. I think in the long run you're losing a lot of value by not value betting here as BB could easily have Qx given how he played the hand.

As far as BB goes, I have no issues with how he played the hand preflop, on the flop, and on the turn. Reasonable to come in with that hand in a heads-up game and of course getting a free card on a board you whiffed (but with a few backdoor possibilities) is pretty nice too. Turn is a good card for him and if button has something like a small or medium pocket pair or A4 or something like that he may win the pot right now. Could make an argument for betting a little bit more and on a tougher site where people play back I would agree, but on this site it's fine to just bet half the pot.

On the river I think BB has to bet, maybe $30 or so. Button didn't seem like the type of player that would bluff with a busted draw and even though it's impossible to put him on JJ given how he played the flop and turn it's plausible he has Qx and could have even backed into 2 pair and would be willing to call a bet, but not bet himself.

So yeah that's how the highest stakes get played at this site. Was watching some other hands and it plays pretty passively overall. Lot of limped pots and a lot of small pots being won after the flop rather than big all-in confrontations. Surprising given that this site is linked to a sportsbook; one would think that players would want to gamble more. Wish I could have played with them.
