World Blogger Championship of Online Poker

So here's how this thing went. 1337 players entered (OMG l33t!!!!1111). This year Stars did something different. It issued a tournament ticket to players who pre-registered on the site and opened registration for the tournament itself from 12-3. It was a good idea as it got rid of the dead stacks who would register a week or two beforehand and then miss the tournament for whatever reason. Of course when I opened my table there were 8 other players ready to go.

A few other things were different. Stars used the Sunday Million structure which started us at 10k stacks at 25/50 blinds. Unfortunately, what also changed was the lack of bounties. No prizes for knocking anyone out. You had to really be l337 to get any prize.

I wasn't really impressed with any of the prizes until the final two tables, and I really didn't feel like grinding it out for a longshot, so I used the tourney to experiment with a few things and refine my game. This was a good tournament to do it, since most players took it at least somewhat seriously and you didn't have people just shove in every hand as in typical freerolls. I'll tell you now I only lasted an hour, but there were some key hands.

Very first hand:

I weak-lead with the flush draw. I did get a fold out, but the next guy raised me. He certainly could be playing back at me here, but I have no reason to believe that just yet, so I just fold. He still had a guy left to act, so I'd lean more toward big hand. Might have called there, but I could have wound up with two pair paying off a set. I just got out with only 50 invested.

Small raise here with the tens. Limping is also an option, but I want to take initiative with the blinds having gone up two levels. Out of position though I'm not going to build a huge pot with a hand such as this, so the 3x raise works here.

Nice hand, nice betting. Did you get the answer? FOUR QUEENS! If I'm going to run into quads, glad it's in a freeroll. Also could have lost a lot more on the hand.

JJ improved to a set, AJ improved to top pair. He checks, and I just bet 3000 intending to call a shove. He folds though, it was probably AK/AQ. I think you're so much better waiting for a flop. You might miss some "value" by reraising, but you get it back when your opponent c-bets after a missed flop.

An orbit or so later got 94 OTB, raised, got minreraised, and just put it in. Wouldn't have made that initial raise in a real $ tourney, but I ended up going against ATo as a 65-35 dog. We both paired our top card and neither improved and I was gone in 1030th place.
