FTOPS

So FTOPS started on Wednesday and similar to SCOOP, there are lower buyin tournaments to give us small time players a chance to participate. Looked at the schedule and it wasn't looking good for me to be able to participate, but a late change in my work schedule gave me a rare weekend off, so no better way to kick it off than some Friday night stud. Buyin was $22 and over 1500 participated (as opposed to 500 for the $216 event. Here's some fun hands.

Tournament - 7 Card Stud High-Low (30/60), Ante 5, Bring-In 10 (converter)

Seat 1: 4,328
Hero: 3,975
Seat 3: 3,975
Seat 4: 4,177
Seat 5: 3,975
Seat 6: 3,930
Seat 7: 3,640
Seat 8: 4,000

Seat 4: xx xx 8___folds
Seat 5: xx xx 8___folds
Seat 6: xx xx 6___calls
Seat 7: xx xx 6___calls
Seat 8: xx xx Q___folds

I get to close the action here with two wired kings. I almost certainly have the best high hand but I can't see myself having much of an equity edge even with no aces out. Still too good to fold, and my cards are very live, and getting to close the action I'm certainly going to take a look at 4th.

4th Street - (3.00 SB)

Seat 1: xx xx 3 Q___checks
Hero: K K J 9___checks
Seat 3: xx xx 2 8___checks
Seat 6: xx xx 6 5___checks
Seat 7: xx xx 6 7___checks

9 of diamonds and it gets checked around. Perhaps could have taken a shot here? If I was in a later position I would have.

Hero: K K J 9 7___checks
Seat 3: xx xx 2 8 4___checks
Seat 6: xx xx 6 5 3___checks
Seat 7: xx xx 6 7 J___checks

Looks like seats 3 & 6 have lows, so I'm going to continue to check. Wow, can't believe no one is betting this.

Seat 3: xx xx 2 8 4 J___checks___folds
Seat 6: xx xx 6 5 3 A___bets

Now there's an Ace out and while it could just be completing a low, I elect to toss it here. Actually since the pot is very small, this is an easy fold.

I'm heads up with seat 7 and no reason to check this. Not only do I believe I have the best hand with A high, I believe he bricked with that T, so no reason to not represent 4 to a low as well.

5th Street - (2.00 BB)

I have a marginal hand, a lot of live outs, only one 3 is gone, only one 2 is gone, and all the 7s & 8s are live. I'm going to try and limp this, the table had been pretty passive up to this point so I was hoping to induce a barrage of limpers behind me. The ace completes but still 5 people go to 4th.

The thing about this game is that there's so much to calculate and it's not like hold'em where you know what a hands odds are against another hand. In stud you have to also take into consideration all of the upcards. Anyway this guy I suppose could have a pair of Js he played timidly up until now or maybe even Js up? I get moved again, so no reads on the players. I get a marginal 844 in the bring-in, gets folded to the last player to act and of course he raises. I can't accept that, as you can see there's already another 9 out. I thought he was just trying to steal it so I went with the hand. He could easily have 987 or 9TJ here or 3 s, or so I thought.

I finish in the top 300, about 125 places out of the money. Had fun though, was reasonably happy with the way I played, don't regret my decision at all on the last hand. I have 1.5 big bets left, can't just sit around.

$10+$1 hold'em tomorrow, maybe I'll play but I dunno if I want to spend a rare Saturday off playing in another one of these.
